“Good science boils down to transparency.” - Nathaniel Barr
This quote comes from the Earthmates podcast episode "The Science of Creativity with MOLECULE Nathaniel Barr" that was published this week.
It's actually a quote that the AI bots pulled out of our hour long convo. And I'm glad they did. It definitely stuck out to me both during the recording and editing.
Partly because I feel that transparency is a key ingredient to most good things. Of course, there are many times mystery, magic, awe, and wonder are the perfect ingredients too.
But in the honor of this quote, this week's blog is all about transparent stories in each of the 3 Step Reciprocity Cycle.
It's interesting to think of transparency under this first step. It feels so foundational that how can it be anything but transparent.
But then I remember the trick we have played on ourselves as humans. Where we have become more attached and in tune with the dry wall that surrounds us than the trees, rivers, and air. And this is the emoji for home. 🏠
The trick where we refer to nature as "outdoors." And Mars is Mars but for some reason Earth is "the Earth."
The trick where I battle myself when it comes to things like water filters and air conditioning. How I feel judgmental about people that turn to these things to insulate their homes even further as the climate changes.
Home is a very simple four letter word full of complexity. We need the superpowers of all 5 Earth Archetypes to help acknowledge and be transparent. It will take us all being really honest with ourselves, each other, and Earth.
Over the last couple weeks, I've had a lot of people in the "climate space" take the Earth Archetype quiz. Considering that they are not the main intended audience, it's been interesting to see they behind the scenes results and hear their feedback.
What?!? Why are they not the audience? (I hear you asking....). Because the EAs are intended for people stuck. Frozen. Looking like this 🤷🏽. People in the "climate space" are already doing quite a bit.
Now, the general public tends to have a rather wide range of scores on the 5 types. With a top score of 20 in each category, they get a mix of 18, 12, 13, 8, 11. Well, 18 is the clear winner. And the quiz does it's job to help people find a path from climate anxiety to community action.
For those in the "climate space," I'm seeing lots of high scores across the board. This makes me wonder because I have several questions that are meant to differentiate. For example, I have 5 different questions that ask how people approach problem solving.
At this point, my biggest takeaway is this....
Within the "climate space," we are used to doing a rather length preamble or justification about why climate. One of the wonderful things about places like Hollywood Climate Summit is that we can skip that and get to the juicy stuff.
So I'm wondering, are these folks so used to navigating so many opinions about climate that they answer high scores for so many questions? Or are they not taking the time to reflect enough to use the full spectrum of 0-4. Or is there a bias in the questions towards systems theory as one quiz taker suggested? Or is there another possibility...?
Would love to hear your thoughts after you take the quiz!
And as Earth Archetypes gets more and more momentum (with more and more people involved), I'm navigating how to have transparent conversations.
Recently, I worked with the amazing Rhianna Basore as the first person she lead through a program about success habits. The TLDR version is that it's 6 habits of mindset to multiply success.
I entered the process wondering what it could tell me as I moved from have a service based business to one of thought leadership and investment. One of the interesting things the assessment showed me is that my sense of integrity is super high, and I expect the same from those around me.
It also came up during a resolving conflict workshop I recently attended. One of the initial steps was "assume positive intent." I flat out rejected it. Preferring to "ask rather than assume."
And though I understand the value of "polite persistence," I felt my temples boil when someone expects me to do so to get them to review a 3 page document even though they are getting $5k to do so.
Following the magic 3 rule, I'll stop there, but the list could go on. When it comes to community, it's probably my most challenging aspect.
Tell me the truth about anything. That I can handle. Yet, for others, the opposite is true.
Interestingly, this spectrum is not one that I've mapped out on along the Earth Archetypes. At the moment it seems to be more in the realm of Attachment Theory than EAs.
But I'm curious... Where do you fall along this issue? And what strategies have helped you navigate?
