“I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself." -- Marlene Dietrich
The 3 Step Reciprocity Cycle is both ancient and emerging. Something I've been discovering since my 2016 "a-ha!" moment of "Earth is my Home. Arts are my skillset." Yet earth based cultures have been passing down for generations. Well, however it is bubbling to the surface, I've been seeing something similar to the 3 Step Reciprocity Cycle in the work of so many others that inspire me. Let's take a look in this week's blog through a different lens...
If you've read any other past blog, you see the 3 Steps as the 3 headers. This week, the headings are people, books, organizations, etc that have a similar format. Starting with the emergent and landing on the ancient before a final footnote. The question is...what helps you?
Reminder: The 3 Step Reciprocity Cycle is...
Acknowledge Earth Is Our Home
Discover Your Earth Archeytype
Work Together in Community
As an apt place to start with emergence, let's look at what brown has to say in the interdiction to her book "Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds."
Can you see all 3 Steps of the Reciprocity Cyle in that short paragraph?
How about in this next one?
Ayana Elizabeth Johnson
In her TEDTalk, Johnson shares the 3 circles of her venn diagram to climate action.
At a Powell's Books reading of her new book "What If We Get It Right?", she said that the "What are you good at?" circle can often be the hardest for people. That's where Earth Archetypes really shines because they can help you identify elements.
"What brings you joy?" is most similar to "earth is our home" -- especially considering that the conclusion in the intersection is intended to result in "your climate action."
And "What work needs doing?" is in the same vein as "work together in community."
Simons dove tails very closely when defining leadership in her book "Nature, Culture & The Sacred: A Woman Listens for Leadership." Here it is -- complete with my notes.
Brand new to my world is Dinos. Even though I've been thinking about doing a post like this for awhile, my conversation with her this week cemented it. Talking about the beautiful ways we align brought us straight to the 3 Step Reciprocity Cycle.
In her work with Kindred Lane, she helps people find what is uniquely theirs to do through 6 pillars of internal and external focus which fall into 3 areas:
Self (individual path)
One Another (community)
Nature (impact)
Thank you for being such a mirror!
Kimmerer's book "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants" is almost always mentioned with a a form of reverence. Blending millennia and modern, this memoir reintroduced the industrialized West to the concept of reciprocity. Her preface gets me every time!
As I sought what my ancestors would have done to honor this cycle, I'm grateful I came upon the work do Thomas. Interestingly, the only male in this group of powerful women. His excellent book "Sacred Gifts: Reciprocity and the Gods" details how Druid/Pagan practices of reciprocity stemmed from the culture of hospitality at the time. And even more, in the sanctuary he has built to honor these ways, this sign reminds you of such pivotal elements.
Mine is that you share this blog with someone. Thank you!
