A Moment: when "that person" becomes the one people call

July 30, 20262 min read

A Line I Heard

"I don't want to be known as 'that person' who always brings up climate."

Journey Framing:

The fear of being "that person" is one of the biggest reasons people stay quiet about climate.

But what if being that person made you essential instead of alienating?

Let's move through it together to build language for real conversations.

Starting with "Notice"...

NOTICE

What happens when you read this quote?

Maybe you feel the cringe. The eye rolls. The "here she goes again."

Or maybe part of you actually want to be that person. And that's the part that scares you.

Whatever's showing up, just notice it's there.

CONNECT

Becky works for The Nature Conservancy in Mississippi — where she's lived her whole life. She knows every landowner by name and they know her parents. They also call her "that one who cares about the trees." She's also the first one they call when they find something they can't identify.

Here's what Network sees: Becky didn't become essential DESPITE being "that person." She became essential BECAUSE of it. Being known for one thing, consistently, over time… That's how you become the person people call.

TRY

This week, try this:

Notice one place (a neighborhood, a workplace, a friend group) where nobody is yet "that person" about climate.

Consider: what would it look like to be known there just by showing up consistently?

No announcement needed. Just start.

REST

You don't have to be Becky overnight.

Roots take time. Start with one conversation, one question, one thing you're willing to be known for.

& REPEAT

Watch for this pattern elsewhere.

Notice when you're avoiding being known for something because you're afraid of the cringe version.

Ask yourself: what's the Becky version of this? The one that just shows up because you care.
