A Moment: when local seems too small

A Line I Heard

"What's local got to do with it?"

Journey Framing:

For the Portland episode for How on Earth? LIVE, we started by questioning why local matters for a planetary crisis.

We're not here to break this down.

We're moving through it together to build language for real conversations.

NOTICE

What happens when you read this quote?

Maybe there's a flash of "good question, actually" — because climate is global, right? Maybe some defensiveness shows up if you've been doing local things and suddenly they feel small. Maybe you're genuinely curious what the connection is.

Whatever's showing up, just notice it's there.

CONNECT

Climate is planetary. Your city council is not. The scale doesn't seem to match.

But local policy is where things can most likely move. Cities pass climate resolutions. Counties adopt new building codes. School districts change procurement. Local reporters spread the news. Then other places copy what works.

Network sees the pattern: local isn't too small. It's the test kitchen. What passes in your town becomes the template somewhere else. What you show up for can become proof it's possible.

Global crisis, local leverage. Both true at the same time.

TRY

This week, try this:

Pick one local thing you can actually influence — a city council meeting, a letter to your school board about procurement, dropping stuff at Goodwill instead of the dump, joining a watershed cleanup.

Not to save the planet alone. To add one data point that this community cares.

That's it. You're showing up where your voice counts.

REST

You don't have to go to every city council meeting. You don't have to be the person who knows every local policy. One local thing is enough. Pick where your time and energy actually fit.

& REPEAT

Watch for this pattern elsewhere.

Notice when "local" feels irrelevant to a global crisis. That's your signal: you're measuring impact by scale instead of leverage. Each time you catch it, you remember — local is where policies shift, models spread, and your specific voice actually moves things.
