A Moment: Nobody Wants to Be That Person

A Line I Heard

"I think a lot of the reason people don't do stuff is because they fear being seen as virtue signaling or weird."

Journey Framing:

We're not here to break this quote down.
We're moving through it together
to build language for real conversations.

NOTICE

What happens when you read this quote?

Maybe there's a flash of recognition — a specific moment you didn't say something, didn't bring the thing, didn't let on that you cared. Maybe some relief that someone named it. Maybe some irritation that this is even a thing we have to navigate.

Whatever's showing up (the recognition, the relief, the mild self-judgment about the self-judgment) just notice it's there.

CONNECT

You know that moment right before you don't say the thing? That pause where you calculate whether caring will make you look like a lot?

Most people who care know that pause. They're just not saying so. (Which is exactly why the pause keeps happening.)

Weaver sees the design flaw: caring got labeled as performance, so people went quiet. The pause isn't proof that you're weird. It's proof the design flaw needs some work.

TRY

This week, try this:

Next time you do something climate-related and feel the urge to hide it or over-explain it… Just don't. Don't announce it, but don't apologize for it either. Bring the container. Order the thing. Take the bike. Let it be unremarkable.

That's it. You're practicing caring without a disclaimer.

REST

You don't have to perform caring loudly to prove it's real. And you don't have to hide it to prove you're normal. Both of those are exhausting. You're allowed to just be someone who does what they do.

& REPEAT

Watch for this pattern elsewhere.

Notice the next time the pause shows up. Each time you recognize the pause for what it is, it loses a little grip. Not gone. Just smaller. And one less person disappearing into it.

Stay in Relationship

This blog is part of an ongoing practice. If you’d like, you can receive one Earth Archetype Moment each week by email. Drawn from real conversations, real uncertainty, and real care. Each one moves gently through notice, connect, try, and R&R. You’re welcome to join the free newsletter here:

P.S. Some of these moments also unfold in public, and I record them on video. You can find those on Instagram and YouTube.
