A Moment: when you wonder if your friendship can hold

A Line I Heard

"I'm afraid if I say what I actually think about climate, my friends will see me differently."

Journey Framing:

Uff-dah! As much as we want to celebrate diversity, “different” somehow feels so threatening.

Let's move through it together to build language for real conversations.

Starting with "Notice"...

NOTICE

What happens when you read this quote?

Maybe you recognize the version of yourself you quietly put away before walking into the room. The climate self that doesn't quite make it to the party.

Or maybe you feel the specific irony of caring about diversity and still flinching when someone says "you're different than I thought."

Whatever's showing up, just notice it's there.

CONNECT

"Different" has a long history of being both embraced and shunned. The fear of the second is what keeps us quiet.

Here's what Weaver sees: most people stay quiet about climate because they wrongly assume their friends will see it as a major difference. Let’s mythbust!

Myth 1: Your friends don't care.
A supermajority do. Half just don't know how to talk about it. Congrats to you for giving it a go.

Myth 2: Friendship is about sameness.
It's actually about someone seeing all of you (including the part that thinks about climate at 2am) and still choosing you.

TRY

This week, try this:

Think of one friend you suspect might actually care about this too. Not the one you're sure about. The one you've been calculating.

Say one true thing: "I've been thinking about climate a lot lately. Do you ever think about it?"

Then stop. Let them respond. See which version of "different" shows up.

REST

You don't have to introduce your whole climate self at once.

One true thing is enough to find out if the friendship can hold it. It usually can.

& REPEAT

Watch for this pattern elsewhere.

Notice when you're bracing for the wounding version of "different" before you even know which one you're going to get.

Each time you catch it, you get to choose: keep the version of yourself that fits the room, or say one true thing and find out who's actually in there with you.
