A Moment: when someone asks if we have a chance
A Line I Heard
"Do you think we actually have a chance to save ourselves?"
Journey Framing:
A founder asked me this on a hike.
I started with: “Depends what you mean by ‘save.’”
Let's move through it together. To build language for real conversations.
Starting with "Notice"...
NOTICE
What happens when you read this quote?
Maybe you feel the weight of being asked. It’s certainly a question that carries a big punch.
Or maybe you feel this question in your own chest. The one you've been carrying and waiting to ask out loud.
Whatever's showing up, just notice it's there.
CONNECT
Here's what makes this question so hard: "save" is a rescue story. Someone swoops in, fixes the system, we go back to how things were.
But here's what Metaphor sees: we've been conned into thinking the current system is a baseline worth returning to. A system built on extraction and exploitation that's been burning through planetary boundaries for decades.
The climate crisis is also a crisis of imagination. Can we picture something worth building toward? And can we work towards it even if it doesn’t turn out the way we want?
TRY
This week, try this:
When someone (or you) asks if we have a chance, start with examining your definition of “save.”
What does that look like for you? And is that within the laws of nature?
REST
Ask any artist: boredom and rest are where the good ideas show up.
Let your mind wander. See what surprises you.
& REPEAT
Watch for this pattern elsewhere.
Notice when “save” means heroics out of your control.
Each time you catch it, offer the reframe. Climate is a relationship. What relationship do you want?
